Those who hold marginalized identities, particularly those in LGBTQ communities, face both social and economic burdens for their difference. Dr. Vivienne Ming - a transgender scientist who shifted her research to focus on equality for people of color, LGBTQ folks, women and those with physical disabilities - examines the real financial cost placed on marginalized peoples throughout their education and carees. Ming determined that social signifiers (like prestigious schools) become heavily tethered to success for those who have been categorized as different. These effects accumulate overtime and the aggregate discrimination places folks at a significant disadvantage. Ming hopes to bring more attention to the LGBTQ wage gap by demonstrating the multifaceted, intersectional nature of this identity.
