The National Institute on Retirement Security reports that women are 80 percent more likely than men to live in poverty from age 65 onwards. The gender wage gap plays a significant role in negatively impacting women’s retirement readiness, but it is not the sole cause. Divorce, single parenting, and the fact that women tend to live longer than men all exacerbate women’s lower retirement savings.
