Study Reports Women of Color Feeling Unsafe, Unwelcome in Science

A study conducted by the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets surveyed 474 women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields. Among said respondents, 40% of the women of color reported feeling unsafe in the workplace due to their gender while 28% reported feeling unsafe due to their race and 18% reported skipping professional events out of fear of harrasment. Women of color have historically faced hardship in STEM fields, however these negative experiences may be exacerbated in astronomy.
