While the student debt crisis is affecting Americans across all demographics, that debt is not distributed proportionately to the population. For example, two thirds of the $1.4 trillion sum of student debt is carried by women, and the average debt for an African-American woman is more than $10,000 greater than that of male white students. This disparity is caused by a variety of factors, including the wage gap, and the so-called "Mom-Tax."
