Systemic domestic and sexual violence is not only detrimental to the safety and wellbeing of women, but also a significant burden on the U.S. economy. McKinsey reports that the annual financial cost of violence against women is approximately $4.9 billion, 70% of which can be attributed to medical costs, 15% to decreased productivity, and the remaining 15% to lost earnings over women’s lifetimes. Five states and 10 localities have implemented safe time laws, which allow victims to address medical and legal issues without being punished at work.
